Mackenzie High easily wins schools’ competition

Mackenzie High School eased to its third consecutive championship title in the final of the fifth Victory Valley Royals schools’ competition yesterday afternoon at the Mackenzie Sports Club basketball court in Linden.
Most Valuable Player, Akeem Kanhai continued his prolific form in the tournament when he amassed 25 points to lead Mackenzie High past inaugural finalist, the New Silver City Secondary, 50–36.
From reports reaching Kaieteur Sport from the Mining Town last evening, Kanhai placed the opposition under immense pressure when he led his team to a 35–16 lead after the first half.

He received support from Sheldon Noel, who scored 12 points. Mackenzie High will now be allowed to keep the lien trophy after winning the competition for a third consecutive time. They won the two previous competitions, in 2006 and 2008.
Marlon Pollydore scored 13 points while Lance Pollard had 10 points for New Silver City in the final.
From reports, the school was properly organised but failed to find a defender for former national junior forward, Kanhai.

For his heroics, which led to a second consecutive MVP award, Kanhai received a pair of Nike sneakers. Pollydore was also given a pair of sneakers for his performance compliments of the Victory Valley Royals’ United States–based chapter.
Linden Foundation Secondary defeated Wismar Christianburg Secondary 21–13 to secure third place. Godfrey LaRose scored 13 points for Linden Foundation as no player from Wismar finished with double figures.
