An out of control horse was mercifully put down after it sustained a massive gash when it collided with a car on the Railway Embankment in the vicinity of Blygezyght around midday yesterday.
The driver of the car which was involved in the accident miraculously escaped serious injury.
This newspaper understands that the car was proceeding west along the embankment and the horse in the opposite direction as it was being towed behind a horse drawn cart when the accident occurred. According to eyewitnesses, the horse broke loose and suddenly veered into the path of the car.
Two young men who were operating the cart fled the scene after the accident and since the horse carried no brand, the owner of the car was left counting her losses.
“Like the horse get away and two boys go and catch it back. But they tie de horse pon a long rope and he was pulling and pulling when it jump up pon de car,” an eyewitness told this newspaper.
The driver of the vehicle told this newspaper that she was proceeding at a rate of speed of about 40 miles per hour.
“The horse just skip right in front of the car, a sudden thing and it jump straight in front of me on the car,” the woman said. She said that it was a while before she realized that her car was damaged and she was injured. She sustained a blow and some abrasions to the side of her head.
Her mother who was in the passenger seat escaped without a scratch.
Looking at the vehicle, many persons were surprised that the driver escaped alive. The roof of the vehicle had been crushed and glass from the front windscreen was strewn all over the driver’s side of the car.
As the animal lay writhing in obvious pain, many motorists suggested that it be put out of his misery and a licensed firearm holder finally obliged and put the animal to rest.
