Dear Editor,
I have been a resident of Mahaica for more than 40 years and have never witnessed the massive infrastructure work currently being undertaken by the MMA to secure vulnerable flood prone areas to safeguard farms and the livelihood of many residents.
It was, however, appalling to read in the Kaieteur News edition of April 27, 2009 that some farmers are objecting to the ongoing works that will eventually prevent flooding and the accumulation of water from the heavy rainfall, which we have been receiving over the past few years as a result of climate change.
The farmers/residents need to see the bigger picture and work with the relevant authorities to ensure works are done according to specifications for the benefit of the entire community, rather than isolating themselves for the solutions that will bring long term benefit to the area.
Those that are objecting are bent on creating mischief and most if not all are not farming in the area. The realisation of the ongoing works will witness new lands under cultivation with improved drainage and irrigation services to ensure year-round cultivation. This is the assurance that real farmers of Mahaica are looking forward to guarantee constant returns from cultivations.
My fellow farmers, I urged that the current ongoing works in Little Biabu and along the De Hoop Branch Road be re-examined objectively, taking into consideration the long-term benefits so that the project can proceed without interruption or hesitation.
