The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has been visiting various communities across the country in an effort to receive feedback on the quality of service provided by the various utilities, namely GPL, GWI, GT&T and DIGICEL, and to discuss with citizens how these public utilities can better their services to consumers.
In the past the PUC visited many areas across Guyana, including Corentyne; West Berbice; East Coast Demerara; West Bank Demerara; West Coast Demerara; Parika; Essequibo Coast and Bartica among others.
The Commission has also been engaged in Consumer Awareness Programmes where officers of the Commission meet with consumers at shopping centres, markets, petrol stations and wherever there is heavy consumer traffic around the city of Georgetown.
In 2007, the PUC added secondary schools to its list of places to visit, thereby targeting fourth and fifth formers and higher level students since they are potential consumers of the utilities regulated by the PUC.
Meetings were had with students and teachers of secondary schools both in and out of Georgetown.
The Commission’s first Outreach for the year was at the Helena Primary School, Helena, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, in February, where many issues were raised, discussed and addressed by the utilities.
The next outreach programme is scheduled for tomorrow at 14:00 hrs at the St. Mary’s Primary School, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.
