…affect border crossings
Industrial action by Customs officers in Suriname has effectively shut down the operations of the Moleson Creek Ferry and other legal crossings on its borders with Guyana and French Guiana. Up to yesterday the strike was still ongoing.
A work-to-rule exercise started Thursday and the Surinamese have been working selectively since then. “They worked on Thursday to allow the Inter Guiana Games Athletics contingent from Suriname and French Guiana to travel to Guyana, then downed tools on Friday.”
“They worked on Saturday to permit a delegation from Guyana to travel to Suriname, then downed tools on Sunday.
“They worked on Monday to allow the return of the Inter Guiana Games contingent and were back on strike yesterday,” the source said. This on/off work is very frustrating to people who want to travel to and from Suriname in a legal manner, he added.
The strike is adversely affecting travellers on the Suriname/French Guiana border, too, the source confided.
The grievances of the Surinamese Customs Officers were not clear. They went on strike two days earlier this month and the current industrial activity may be linked to a non-resolution of that grievance.
Persons who have been at the Moleson Creek Ferry stelling at times when the officers temporarily resumed duties were able to cross but there is as yet no predictability about the crossing.
The source expressed the hope that the Government of Guyana may seek to clarify what is going on and make some announcement of some sort on the recent developments on the Guyana/Suriname crossing.
Yesterday afternoon, word came that the Surinamese Customs Officers may work today on a limited scale.
