The Action Committee within the Guyana Rice Producers’ Association will be filing an injunction in the High Court today to suspend the upcoming elections of the organization.
Yesterday, during a joint press conference with the Guyana Trade’s Union Congress, spokesperson for the committee, Jinnah Rahman, said that they are seeking the court’s intervention until measures are put in place to have an independent body to regulate the elections.
The GRPA district association elections is set for Saturday and, according to Rahman, the stage has been set for a ‘massively rigged’ election.
According to the Action Committee, nomination for the election of all District Committee members took place on April 18, last, throughout the country.
The group pointed out that thousands of rice farmers and rice manufacturers were not registered as members of the GRPA and consequently could not participate and be actively involved in the nomination process.
Yesterday, it was noted that despite being an organisation that is under the GRPA Act, through its General Secretary, has willfully failed to register rice farmers and rice manufacturers as members.
This move, it was stated, effectively prevented these persons from engaging in the nomination process and therefore disenabling them to be qualified to nominate anyone, to contest for office.
It also disqualified them from being nominated to stand for office nor can they vote on election day.
The election machinery of the GRPA is totally controlled by the General Secretary and its Executive Committee of the General Council.
According to the Action Committee, these executives have conspired, with their local henchmen, who are aligned to a certain political group to rig the elections of the organisation in their favour and by so doing have total control of the Association and its assets.
As such, Rahman said, the decision was made to move to the courts.
The injunction being sought will disable any election plans until there is a full hearing of the matter.
The recent acts of corruption and malpractices by the current officials, he noted, have brought the Guyana Rice Producers’ Association into disrepute.
