Competition in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Inter-Block Football tournament for 2009 kicked off at the Beterverwagting (BV) Community Centre ground with two matches accompanied by an exhibition Under-15 game.
Attended by several ministry officials, the programme got off to a competitive start with the Under-15 contest which resulted in East BV beating their counterparts from the West 2-0 thanks to a double from DeShane Garnett. These youth games are being used by Coach Joseph ‘Bill’ Wilson to showcase and spot talent in the area and give the younger players much needed exposure.
The main action opened with Triumph (block B) getting the better of their opponents, Sideline (block C) 2-1. Devon Williams was on target for the winners in the 15th minute, however, Romel Gordon equalised for Sideline in the 38th. Yannick Smith (45) put his team in front with the eventual winner.
Backdam or Market Street (block D) enjoyed a much easier passage, brushing aside Housing Scheme (block A) 4-0. Kevin Smith slotted home a double (10, 58), Delroy Deen (45) and Akeem Murray (55) completed the rout.
The competition continues on Friday at the same venue with one match at 4:00pm featuring Sideline against Backdam. That contest however, will be preceded by an Under-15 game in the East Coast League pitting Buxton against host BV.
