Dear Editor,
I’ve just read an interesting piece, “An interview with the poet, Randall Butisingh,” in Kaieteur News (26-04-090 which I enjoyed and I want to thank Ameena Gafoor for it.
Also, I read a few other good articles in the past. Ms Gafoor writes very well on subjects/topics that I find appealing. Please keep up the good work.
I was prompted to write in regard to another topic that I feel The Arts Forum column can shed some spotlight on and perhaps consider it as a subject for a future article. The topic relates to the
preservation of Guyana’s indentured records. Coincidentally, there is a letter from Raymond Chickrie and Shabnam Ali that was published (April 27) in Kaieteur News that addressed this matter.
I cannot over-emphasise the need for more effort to highlight this subject and create greater awareness of its importance and the urgency for the Government to protect and preserve these records.
It appears that the Guyana Government has been deferring and procrastinating any plans to take effective action to digitize these records and make them more available to the public by way of computer/internet access.
I observed the objective of the Arts Forum was clearly spelled in its statement: “THE ARTS FORUM offers an occasional page of critical perspectives on the literature, art, culture and social history of Guyana and the Caribbean.
Our objective is to critically examine neglected issues and lives that call for greater attention.”
Guyana’s indentured records are an integral part of our history and they are an invaluable resource for any Guyanese who may be desirous of tracing their family history.
The proper care of these records has long been compromised by neglect and it is critical that we make concerted effort to get the Guyana Government to take priority action to get these records digitized and better preserved.
I’m sure Ms Gafoor’s cooperative response will be greatly appreciated by many concerned Guyanese. To paraphrase an appropriate adage, “None of us is greater than all of us.”
