John Cena touted to co-host Int’l Wrestle Mania in Guyana

According to a media release from the organisers, come this August, the Guyana National Stadium is expected to be thrown into an entertainment frenzy as arrangements are underway to hold a wrestling tournament of international caliber at the venue.
The event, which would be the first of its kind in Guyana, and by extension the English speaking Caribbean, is expected to be co-hosted by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar and popular film star, John Cena. However, contractual details are still being finalized between the promoters and Cena’s booking agents to confirm his appearance.
Entitled “Caribbean Wrestle Mania 2009”, the event is organized by local businessman and promoter, Dennis Adonis of Sound Proof Music, in collaboration with Taj Mahal Entertainment and the marketing arm of the World Wrestling Entertainment group based in Stamford, Connecticut, United States.
If Cena’s appearance at the event is confirmed, industry insiders predicted that the American actor and wrestler’s presence alone will be enough to fill all of the seats at the Guyana National Stadium.Cena is a five-time World wrestling Champion (three-time WWE Champion and two-time World Heavyweight Champion), and starred in the blockbuster feature films “The Marine” (2006) and 12 Rounds (2009).
At least two other WWE international wrestling stars is expected to form the core of the main event with added performances by a clique of amateur wrestlers who are yet to be confirmed.
Considering the fact that the event is new to the region, Promoters are expecting at least four thousand visitors from the rest of the Caribbean, primarily Trinidad and Tobago to attend the mega sporting event. And as such, discussions are currently ongoing with Caribbean Airlines and LIAT with a view of offering special packages for the premiere.
The promoters indicated that it may cost in excess of 30 million dollars (G$) to pull off even the basics of the event in addition to the cost of leasing and importing the prescribed wrestling ring and stage for the main match. Nonetheless, lead promoter Dennis ‘Smoody’ Adonis says that it is an investment risk his team players are willing to take.
Adonis, who is more popularly credited with staging several international reggae and chutney shows during 2008, says that he has not necessarily abandoned promoting those type of events, but stressed that he is always willing to bring alternative forms of entertainment to locals, and also because he wants to ‘break new grounds” in regional entertainment.
In recent years wrestling has been a prime time event on local televisions for the average teen and young adult, and is believed to have well over thirty thousand hard-core fans in Guyana alone.
According to the Wikipedia Online Encyclopedia, over five million American households or close to twenty million Americans watches professional wrestling every week.
When it is held here, expectedly in August, it is anticipated that it will be the largest international sporting event to be held in Guyana, since the Cricket world cup and the Stanford 20/20 series.
