“I was setup,” said Guyana’s Super Middleweight Boxing Champion, Howard Eastman yesterday, as he pleaded not guilty at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court, West Bank Berbice, to a charge of being in possession of cannabis sativa (marijuana) on Friday night last.
Police alleged that they found Eastman, of Canje, Berbice, with the illegal substance in his possession during a routine check of vehicles and passengers at Weldaad, West Coast Berbice.
The allegation was formally made before Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop when Eastman appeared in Court dressed in a black suit, red shirt and trendy high-top boots.
The boxer, a former British Middleweight and Commonwealth Middleweight Champion, had been kept in custody over the weekend.
Making an application for bail, his Lawyer Joel Persid, told the Court that no drugs had been found on his client.
“The drugs were found on the floor of a vehicle in which there were four other people and none of the others have been charged,” the lawyer said.
The lawyer added that the alleged discovery of the drugs on Eastman had been a deliberate ploy by unknown persons to prevent the boxer from fighting for a $1.5M purse at the “Big Showdown” card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday night last.
The Police however contended differently. They said that four grammes of the prohibited substance had been found in a plastic bag in the boxer’s left side shoe during a body search.
But Police Prosecutor Sergeant Grace Bristol did not object to bail.
Eastman was allowed pre-trial liberty in the sum of $25,000 and told to report to Weldaad Magistrate’s Court on June 2 next for trial.
