– claim male and female football titles
The 2009 Inter Guiana Games ended with a bang for Suriname as their male and female teams won the respective football titles.
The females swamped Guyana 13-0 while the Guyanese male side turned in a much improved display to hold the Surinamese to a 0-0 draw. The result was enough for the Dutch team to win the top place after they defeated French Guiana 1-0 on Saturday at the tournament venue, Guyana Defence Force ground.
Male action was even in most regards with the young ball weavers battling to gain the advantage for their country. Whenever these two countries collide in the world’s greatest sport, there is always a high level of intensity and this encounter was no different.
The fair sized crowd went away satisfied that their countrymen rebounded after going down to French Guiana 2-0 in the opening game on Friday.
The better chances of the game were created by the host team but the Suriname goal keeper Obremao Huibwoud brought off two excellent saves to deny the Guyanese a win. The home team was solid in defence, Colin Nelson doing an excellent job at the back, custodian Kevon Barry also doing well between the uprights. The flair and fire the Surinamese exhibited against their French counterparts was never allowed to blossom by the renewed vigor of the local team.
Even the expulsion of Captain Andrew Murray in the 2nd minute of added time for violent conduct could not distract the host country from earning a creditable draw.
With about 7 minutes to game time, Guyana won a corner during a period when they were on the offensive. A brilliant header by the
active Ron Fiedtkou was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Huibwoud, the play momentarily brought the crowd to its feet as they applauded the effort by the local team.
The Surinamese supporters were singing and chanting for almost the entire game but their efforts to detract the locals did not bear fruit. Their female team though were too hot for Guyana to handle, the inexperience of the home team taken advantage of fully by the more organised and oiled visitors.
Star forward Synthia Sital led the goal spree with seven (7) to follow up her three (3) against French Guiana as she ended the tournament with 10 in two matches.
She was on target in the 1st, 2nd, 36th, 40th, 45th, 65th and 69th minute. Jameicia De Mees found the back of the nets on five (5) occasions (19, 25, 43, 58 & 64) with the other coming off the boot of Omayda Joseph in the 70th minute.
The home team finished at the bottom of both male and female competitions.
