Dear Editor,
Please permit me to respond to Mr. Bovell’s letter which was published under the caption “GUYWA’s plans for improving water supplies in Mackenzie, Linden” on April 13, 2009.
It is imperative that I mention that Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) has in place a comprehensive water supply improvement plan for the entire Linden area which was presented to all stakeholders at the LEAP building on July 25, 2008 in the conference room of the Mayor and Town Council in Linden by GWI.
One of the strategic interventions enshrined in the plan is a project which is aimed at improving water supply on the East Bank Demerara River, Linden, through the installation of an eight-inch diameter transmission line interlinking the Amelia’s Ward and Mackenzie Water Treatment Plants. This intervention will allow for the planned decommissioning of the LPC plant which has long outlived its usefulness and is now very inefficient and therefore costly to maintain.
This interlink is intended to improve system efficiency and reliability, through redundancy, especially during downtime period.
Mr. Bovell can be assured that it is not the intention of GWI to decommission the Mackenzie WTP. This plant is critical to the water supply system of Linden since it serves a large portion of the population on the East Bank of the River.
Mr. Bovell should also take note that the Amelia’s Ward plant has the capacity to deliver approximately 4, 900 cubic meters of water per day. If we were to apply GWI’s design criteria of 180 liters per person per day, this production can theoretically service a population of 27,000 persons.
The 2002 census, documents the population of the villages on the East Bank of Demerara River, Linden, to be in the vicinity of 2,000 which validates the fact that more than adequate water supply is available in the system.
GWI will like to stress the need for water conservation especially in light of the fact that more water is being produced in the entire country than is needed. Residents must be conscious of water conservation methods and apply them. GWI’s Public Education Programme will soon be emphasised in the Linden area and we are excited about this, because we believe we will have an opportunity to embrace the community and work together with residents to deal with challenges affecting them.
Currently there are a number of capital interventions being executed in Linden, all geared at ensuring that residents receive quality, reliable, and safe water supply. We encourage constructive suggestions and are prepared to deal with all concerns of residents. We trust that this response has adequately addressed Mr. Bovell’s concerns.
