Although his condition has been listed as stable, leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) party, Mr Robert Corbin, was yesterday transferred to the Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
According to General Secretary of the party, Mr Oscar Clarke, Corbin, who was on Saturday admitted a patient at the Woodlands Hospital, was transferred to CHI at the request of his doctors who are based in the United States so that his condition could be better monitored.
Clarke disclosed though that the party leader was yesterday up and about and in fact was able to partake in a satisfying meal of fruits at lunchtime.
Saturday afternoon Corbin was driving himself to a party meeting when he began feeling unwell, a development that caused him to divert to the Woodlands Hospital. There are reports that the party leader had suffered a heart attack.
However, Clarke said yesterday that while he has not been privy to details about Corbin’s diagnosis he is aware that he had suffered some amount of “fluttering of the heart” in addition to some chest pains.
On Saturday Corbin’s relatives, including his wife and brother Charles, expressed optimism at his complete recovery.
The party leader, while a patient of the Woodland’s Hospital, was examined by medical officials at which point a number of tests were carried out before he was sedated and left to rest for about three hours.
By nightfall Corbin was alert and was able to communicate with his doctors in New York and the tests had come back negative, according to Charles Corbin. However, the party leader was still experiencing some discomfort and according to the doctors at Woodlands Hospital, he had been stabilised enough to travel.
He is expected to be medi-vacced to the United States on Wednesday. Asked about the delay, the younger Corbin said that it could be a question of logistics.
The brother said that Corbin’s doctors in New York were made aware of the situation and they informed the Corbins that they preferred to have the patient in America.
In brief comments to this newspaper yesterday, Charles stated that the party leader was ‘doing well’.
Meanwhile, business continues as usual within the PNCR camp, according to General Secretary Clarke. He disclosed that the party members have continued with scheduled meetings, attended a church service and the opening ceremony of the Linden Town Day yesterday.
He divulged though that party members are confident that Corbin will make a full recovery eventually, adding that once Corbin has to travel abroad for medical attention the party’s operation will be left in the charge of party executives, Mr. Basil Williams and Ms. Volda Lawrence.
