As they did in Swimming on day two in the first leg of the 2009 Inter Guiana Games, Suriname were large and in charge at the Guyana Defence Force ground in male and female football.
The male team needled a determined and much improved French Guyana outfit while the females were triumphant by a 2-0 margin.
In brilliant sunshine backed up by a steady cooling Atlantic Wind, the Surinamese have placed themselves in a strong position to retain the male title and take the female competition also.
This is the first time the female aspect of the sport is being contested at the competitive level, last year Suriname and French Guiana played exhibition matches.
Unlike the past though, French Guiana has shown that they are an improved unit and not pushovers with a commanding 2-0 win over Guyana on Friday but were not able to repeat that feat against the traditionally strong Surinamese.
The exchanges were even with neither team able to run riot but it was the Surinamese who looked most threatening in the attacking third.
The French team, who early on looked susceptible to the crossed ball in the box, eventually gave up a goal via that route.
After putting up good resistance for the first 42 minutes of the game, the French team eventually cracked with 3 minutes remaining to the half.
Stefano Ryssel squared the ball from the left side deep in the French half and with surgical like precision, the diminutive and acrobatic Evani Esperance beat the goalkeeper at the near post.
The second half was almost a replica of the first with the exchanges being fierce, fast paced and energetic but no more goals came the way of either team giving the Surinamese a hard fought win.
They will now face Guyana in today’s final clash and only need a draw retain the title and bragging rights. If the Guyanese are to dethrone them, they will need to win by three clear goals, tough ask, but not impossible.
On the distaff side, the Suriname side looked the more composed unit out of the three countries. They were able to overcome the determined French Guiana side compliments of first half goals by Cynthia Sital in the 3rd minute and Elvida Lammy in the 25th.
Like their male counterparts, Suriname only need a draw to win the championship but will fancy their chances of a win over an inexperienced Guyanese side which is playing together for the first time.
They lost their opening game by a 7-0 margin to the French but according to Captain Tiffany Sancho, they will rebound and give a very good account of themselves, come this afternoon. Kick off time is 14:00hrs.
