The St Helena College, a new private school, has been opened at Helena, Mahaica, and says it will provide guidance and counseling, and moral and religious education to compliment its academic curriculum.
The college will cater for students from Grade Seven to Grade Eleven, including those writing the CSEC exams, offered by the Caribbean Examinations Council.
The principal, Mrs. Bhagmatie Joree, said that the College stands fully committed to working with the syllabuses produced by the Ministry of Education. She noted that remedial teaching with a special reading programme would help low achievers.
With a computer lab already in place, plans are now afoot for the setting up of a science lab.
The Principal emphasised that no education for young children can be complete without training in human values as this will serve to enable students to develop positive attitudes, thus preparing them to take a useful place in society.
The guest speaker was recently retired Education Officer, Secondary, Region Four, Mr. Doodnauth Jagessar.
He advised students to stay in school and put their best efforts forward to complete their secondary education in order to build a foundation for a successful future and urged the parents to provide the necessary support to ensure that this is achieved.
The owners of the College, Mr. & Mrs. Dipnarine and Bhagmatie Joree, two former teachers with many years of service to government schools, said their goal is to provide a well balanced education for students.
