Novices and Open Bench Press
competition set for Saints today
Dealers of the finest Jewellery in Guyana, Kings Jewellery World and Hotel Tower International Hotel have come on board to support the national Powerlifting team that will participate in the 3rd Annual Caribbean Islands Bench Press and Powerlifting Championships set for Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands May 14 – 16, 2009.
Kings Jewellery donated US$300 while Tower Hotel contributed $20,000.
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation has disclosed that a number of other friends have donated a total of $140,000 to date. The actual cost for each athlete selected to travel is $300,000.
The lifters selected are John Edwards currently ranked 30th in the world and 1st in the Region and the present holder of three regional records in the Masters M 1 125kg class, Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses, silver medalist in the 82.5kg class at the 2008 NAPF Regional Championships but now lifting in his correct weight class (75kg) and Randolph Morgan, the Current National Champion and best lifter at the 2008 GAPF championship in the 82.5kg class. Team Manager will be GAPF President, Peter Green.
Training sessions are continuing on a daily basis and the lifters have all expressed confidence in topping their respective divisions in the US Virgin Islands.
Meanwhile, the 2009 GAPF Novices and Open Bench Press Competition is set for today at the St. Stanislaus College Auditorium from 10:00hrs.
For athletes to participate in this competition dubbed, ‘Developing future Stars’ must be registered and their affiliation dues up to date. General registration fee is $500 while the competition fee is $1,000 per person.
Registration and membership forms can be uplifted, filled in and returned at the competition venue.
Full technical equipment checks will be enforced and athletes are reminded that safety or hiking boots will not be allowed.
