After finishing two wickets away of their second consecutive GTM under-19 three-day win against Demerara in fading light on Friday at the Anna Regina ground, Essequibo play their second match from today at the same venue and should expect a much tougher test from defending champions Berbice.
While Royston Alkins showed astute captaincy, Ronsford Beaton looked genuinely quick on a flat track, Rovendra Parasram looked good in the middle order, the opener pair of Herrell Greene and Navin Singh showed plenty of talent and the pair of left-arm spinners (Anthony Adams and Floyd Henry) bowled well, Essequibo again lacked the ‘killer instinct’ and mental toughness that has plagued their cricket at all levels.
Once a partnership builds the players looked ‘flat’ while it might not be coincidence that the Essequibians, who don’t play any three-day domestic cricket, struggle badly in the last session of the day’s play when they look physically and mentally tired. Had they not dropped several catches in the closing stages of the penultimate and final day, they would have easily beaten Demerara.
Today they face a team which is much more organized and prepared than Demerara and will depend on their openers to give them a solid start on what should be another slow track while Parasram, Alkins and the aggressive Grayson Paul will also need to contribute with the bat. Left-arm pacer Suresh Persaud will hope to support Beaton with the new ball while Alkins and the left-arm spinners could have a lot of work to do with the ball. It will also be important that Greene improves quickly as a keeper since his work behind the stumps in the first match was below par.
The Berbicians, led by national under-19 wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble, arrived in Region Two yesterday and even without lively national youth pacer Keon Joseph who will only play in the one-day series due to injury, are confident of successfully defending both their three-day and one-day titles.
Openers Harrinarine Chattergoon and Eon Hooper will hope to build a solid foundation while the national under-19 pair of stylish Seon Hetmyer and pugnacious Jonathan Foo could give Essequibo plenty of headaches in the middle order if they get going on an outfield that was cut yesterday afternoon.
They will expect support from left-hander Alex Amsterdam, Manoj Pooranauth, Joemal LaFleur, Bramble and Sahadeo Somai. Pacer Keyron Fraser, one of four Guyana under-19 players side, will share the new ball with Clavern Beresford while Hetmyer, Guyana under-17 left-arm spinner Trinson Carmichael, Somai, Foo and LaFluer should provide bowling support.
This competition will be used to select a Guyana under-19 trials squad for the regional tournament in July and the players will be keen to impress the selectors with good performances.
Only two of the three selectors were present for the last game since Sheik Mohamed failed to show up. It has been reported that he has resigned but the Guyana Cricket Board has not issued a release on the matter or sent a replacement. It is hoped that they do so urgently since the future of many of these youths depends on the decisions made by the selectors.
Admission is free today and a large crowd is expected when the game starts at 10:00hrs.
