A keen tussle is anticipated when he Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) stages the prequalification tournament for second tier players at the Chamber of Commerce Building, Waterloo Street, South Cummingsburg tomorrow morning.
More than twenty players that fall outside the top fifteen ratings are eligible to participate. Players like Paul Adams, Michael Benjamin, Devon Dublin and Maurice Munroe will feel that they have an excellent chance of procuring accolades in this tournament since the top seeds, the likes of National champion, Fred Collins, Abigail McDonald, James Krakowsky and Ulric Harris are all debarred from playing.
This tournament follows closely on the heels of the tournament between the top ten seeds, held last month and will determine the final compilation for the national tournament.
The top three finishers will receive attractive prizes including mp3 players as well as cash prizes, while the top ten players will qualify to compete in the National championships. The two top players to emerge from the Nationals will then clash in a best of five tournament where the winner will be declared the National champion. That person will subsequently leave for Malaysia to represent Guyana in the World Scrabble Championships later in the year.
Officials of GASP have also disclosed that registration commences at 09:00hrs tomorrow morning and only the first 30 persons will be considered for participation. This period ends at 10:00hrs sharp, paving the way for the start of the tournament.
While the top 15 players are debarred from this tournament, they are reminded that they are required to register for the Nationals tournament, slated for May 1-7.
