Three people, one of them a policeman and the other a member of the Special Constabulary, have been removed from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, following the bust of a drug smuggling ring earlier this month.
In the wake of the drug bust, two men described as Red Caps (baggage carriers), Mark Lim, 19, of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara and Ryan Mangah, 29, of Public Road, Timehri, have already been placed before the courts.
The policeman at the centre of a drug smuggling operation, remains free of prosecution thus far, despite evidence to suggest that he may have been complicit in allowing 18 kilogrammes of cocaine to be shipped to the United States.
According to a senior official, he is likely to be charged soon. The report on the investigation into his involvement is almost complete. There is evidence that he removed the bag and went through the motion of conducting a search.
The person monitoring the movement of bags at the airport duly recorded the action of the policeman.
Three people are supposed to be working together during searches. However, when this bag was to be inspected, the CANU rank and a Special Constable were conspicuously absent, according to one investigator. They too have been removed from the airport.
The drug was discovered in one suitcase. The situation was so glaring that when the ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit opened the suitcase they did not have to search.
The only other thing in the suitcase was a towel.
But the policeman claimed that he had checked the suitcase and had ordered that it be shrunk wrapped.
A source close to the investigation said that the policeman had been under investigation for some time.
On one occasion he was off duty but he remained at his post until he realised that he was beginning to attract attention.
