Former British Guiana, Guyana and West Indies middle order batsman and leg break bowler Ivan Madray who played two Tests against Pakistan in 1957-58 played his final innings Thursday.
Madray, who was born on 2nd July, 1934 at Port Mourant, Berbice, was on vacation in Guyana.
According to a Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) release, Madray was on his way to the airport to return home on Wednesday and took ill. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died Thursday.
The BCB in their releases noted that Madray made his first class debut for British Guiana against Australia on the 20th April, 1955 and made his test debut against Pakistan on February 5th, 1958 in Trinidad and Tobago.
He played two test matches for the West Indies as a Right handed batsman and leg break googly bowler. Madray was one of several outstanding cricketers to emerge from Port Mourant under the guidance of former West Indies batting star Sir Clyde Walcott. Other players to play with Madray included Basil Butcher, Rohan Kanhai and Joe Solomon.
“The President and Executive of the Berbice Cricket Board would like to extend heartfelt sympathy to the wife, children and other relatives of the late Ivan Madray.
The board shares their sorrow and would remember them in their prayers in the hope that God would provide them faith and strength in their moments of sadness.
The Berbice Cricket Board would unveil later in the year a programme to honour the memory of this outstanding Berbice cricketer as we are confident that young players can learn much from how Mr. Madray played his cricket especially from his discipline passion and hard work.”
Meanwhile the Management of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club and other member clubs has also expressed their profound sympathy to the Madray’s family. The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club which is located less than a mile from the birth home of Mr. Madray since 1990 has been inspired by the legends of Port Mourant especially Madray, Butcher, Solomon and Kallicharran.
“The best tribute the cricketing community of Berbice can give to Madray is for our young cricketers to follow in his footsteps especially his love of the game without looking out for too much financial rewards.”
The funeral service of the late Ivan Madray takes place today in his home village of Port Mourant.
Madray, played two Tests against Pakistan in 1957-58 with no success, scoring three runs and taking one wicket. His first-class career consisted of only six matches and was over by the time he was 24.
