Thirty-two-year-old Leroy Forde, of 67 Victoria Road, Plaisance, was yesterday remanded to prison after he was slapped with four charges ranging from causing death by dangerous driving to failure to report an accident.
Forde made his court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
It was alleged that the accused, on April 18, at North Road and Wellington Street, drove minibus BJJ 7296 in a dangerous manner resulting in the death of Leroy Bobb, 70.
Another charge states that Forde, on the same day and at the same place, drove his minibus after an accident occurred and failed to report the said accident to a Police Station or Police Constable within 24 hours.
A third charge stated that he drove the same minibus which was involved in an accident whereby injuries was caused to Leroy Bobb, and failed to render any assistance by failing to take the said person to receive medical treatment.
The last charge stated that he drove his minibus, which was uninsured to cover third party risk.
He was not required to plead since all the charges were indictable. Attorney at Law, Pamela De Santos, who in a bail application told the court that Forde has been a driver for the past 15 years, represented him.
The lawyer said that Forde is the father of eight, which shows that he has sufficient ties to society that would keep him in the jurisdiction. De Santos pleaded with the court for bail to be admitted in a reasonable sum.
However Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith objected to bail and told the court that there may be more charges instituted against the defendant after the file is sent back to the Director of Public Prosecution.
The prosecutor further told the court that the defendant hit the deceased and dumped the body at a different location.
Attorney at law De Santos interjected and told the court that grounds in which the prosecution was objecting to bail is mere speculation.
Griffith then told the court that there was a clear indication that he was trying to get away from the law. “It’s a clear indication that he trying to get away when he dumped the body”.
Bail was denied and the accused is expected to make another court appearance on Monday.
Police on the East Coast of Demerara last Sunday discovered the mangled body of Leroy Bobb on the Rupert Craig Highway, in the vicinity of Turkeyen.
The man sustained injuries to the head, upper body and both feet were broken. The body was taken to the Georgetown Hospital where he was pronounced dead, and later taken to the mortuary.
