Demerara held on for a draw after losing first innings points to Essequibo on the final day of their three-day under-19 GTM Inter-County cricket match at the Anna Regina ground yesterday.
Set 162 to win from a minimum of 46 overs in the final session after left-arm pacer Andre Stoll (4-25) and national under-19 left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun (3-10) combined to dismiss Essequibo for 100 in their second innings, Demerara were 143-8 with 16.1 of the mandatory 15 overs remaining when they accepted a second offer for bad light at 18:02hrs with Stoll unbeaten on 44.
Scores: E’bo 227 & 100, Dem 166 & 143-8.
Demerara resumed on 128-6 replying to Essequibo’s 228 and lost three wickets in12 minutes, mainly through senseless cricket from the overnight pair and good work from left-arm spinner Anthony Adams.
Vikesh Dhaniram (3) hit the first ball of the day back to off-spinner Royston Alkins and charged down the track for an impossible run only to be run out by the bowler. Seven runs later Keshan Shivgobin (11) was run out ball watching, after standing his ground as Stoll drove a ball behind him to mid-off and both batsmen ended at the none-striker’s end even though the fielder fumbled with the ball.
It was soon 136-9 when Stoll (5) was leg before to Adams and the innings should have ended at 09:51 hrs when Floyd Henry at deep mid wicket put down Seon Daniels off Alkins.
Daniels lofted Alkins for a six and along with Bishun (15*) added 27 in a frustrating last wicket partnership which lasted 58 minutes in sweltering heat. The second new ball was taken at 148-9 and the impressive Ronsford Beaton quickly trapped Daniels leg before for 14 as the innings closed at 10.40hrs giving the hosts a first innings lead of 61. Beaton took 4-31 while Adams (2-28) and Alkins (2-38) supported for Essequibo.
Essequibo came out with all guns blazing and Navin Singh flicked Daniels for four in the first over of the innings which cost 10 runs. Herrell Greene clipped the pacer disdainfully to the square leg boundary in his next over to the delight of the noisy crowd which again included many students from the Anna Regina Multilateral and the Cotton Field Secondary.
Left-arm pacer Stoll bowled gun-barrel straight on the docile surface and soon induced Greene, who made 55 in the first innings, to edge a loose drive to the keeper after making seven to leave Essequibo on 15-1.
Navin Singh (6) again looked solid before he miscued a pull off the frugal Stoll and lobbed a catch to short square-leg. Rovendra Parasram and his Skipper Alkins saw Essequibo to a lead of 101 by lunch and from 40-3 at the interval, Essequibo progressed to 58 on the heavy outfield before Alkins (4) was caught behind off Daniels.
Parasram played some delightful cover drives and hit three fours before he was stupendously caught left-handed at slip by Trevon Griffith cutting at Bishun.
Floyd Henry, who was dropped before he had scored off leg-spinner Amir Khan, hit 14 but no other batsman reached double figures as Essequibo looked to put a victory target on the board by tea.
Jeetendra Sookdeo, batting in pain after aggravating his back injury, battled bravely as Essequibo went on a catch-dropping spree.
Sookdeo was put down on 37 and 40 with the score on 80 and 87 while Stoll, promoted to ‘step up the tempo’ was dropped in successive overs off Beaton and Adams on 12.
After Sookedo was caught behind off Beaton for 47 at 95-4, Essequibo fought themselves back into the game with the wickets of Dexter Solomon (1), Shivgobin (0), Dhaniram (8) and Daniels as Demerara slipped to 132-8.
Stoll batted responsibly and was not afraid to dispatch the bad balls and had Amir Khan with him when the bad light offer was accepted with victory 19 runs away. Adams finished with 3-25.
