It was double sadness for the host country on day one of the male and female football competition as French Guiana downed the Guyanese teams at the Guyana Defence Force ground yesterday afternoon.
The male team were put away 2-0 thanks to a double, one either side of play by striker Axel Stanislas.
His first came via a well directed header
in the 29th minute and he sealed the deal for his country and team in the 70th minute with a well taken left foot shot after receiving the ball from a free kick.
The winning unit looked a solid bunch against the Guyanese who lacked potency upfront, captain and main striker Andrew Murray failing to get his way against the French Guiana defence.
The female French side set the tone for the afternoon when they hammered the historic Guyanese team made up of students from a number of schools in Berbice, 7-0.
Netting a brace each was Ideme Aissi in the 6th and 11th, Jessicia Godet (21 & 60) and the diminutive forward wearing the number 10 jersey, Soriana Constant in the 41st and 65th minute. Ketsia Azevedo tucked in the other in the 48th.
The local side was no match for the French lasses who dominated the action from start to finish.
Rivalry will continue this afternoon at the same venue with another double header (male & female) when Suriname and French Guiana face off against each other. Kick off time is 14:00hrs. Meanwhile, the swimming competition will commence this afternoon at the Castellani Pool, Homestretch Avenue from 14:00hrs.
