Defending champions Sunburst Camptown played the game of their lives to beat a tuff and resilient Golden Stars 6-5 on sudden death penalty kicks, coming from behind in the three periods of the game, regulation, extra time and penalty kicks when action continued on Thursday evening at the Plaisance Community Centre ground. The evening’s other match up saw Ann’s Grove, now enjoying the title of giant killers, nailing East Demerara’s division-one champions Buxton United 2-0.
By the 13th minute of the encounter, Ann’s Grove had already sealed victory, Kelon Loncke in the 7th and Antonio Jackson in the 13th burying their shots.
Buxton did try to fight back but were denied owing to some tight defence work by the Ann’s Grove side whose supporters cheered and applauded them all along.
Camptown in the opening encounter found themselves 2-0 down, Jason Clement (10) and Randy King (51) handing Golden Stars the lead.
But the defending champions fired back through efforts by Anthony Belfield (66) and Telson McKinnon on the stroke of full time to push the game into extra time.
Ann’s Grove again took the lead when Shawn Douglas found the back of the nets only to see Camptown even the score yet again two minutes later, veteran Troy Prescod on target.
Prescod’s shot pushed the game into penalty kicks with Camptown’s captain Orlando Gilgeous sending the first shot way over the cross bar. Their next four shots were on target while Ann’s Grove’s first four hit the target but their 5th, which was taken by Jermaine Spencer, followed in the same vein as Gilgeous’ shot. It was now down to sudden death kicks with the first team to miss losing. Belfield rocked the nets for Camptown but his success was matched by Golden Stars’ Akini Cameron.
Camptown’s goalie Richie Richards saved the next shot and Kwame La Fleur nailed his to hand Camptown a memorable win and place in the quarter-finals against Ann’s Grove.
The action will intensify this evening at the same venue when Alpha United square off with Victoria Kings from 18:00hrs with BK International Western Tigers matching skills with Pele in the feature match-up of the night.
