Eulex Cosbert, a city resident, did not cater for security surveillance cameras when she traveled to the Ancient County to conduct her shoplifting trade at a New Amsterdam supermarket.
The woman, of East La Penitence, was caught red handed placing a bottle of El Dorado 15-year-old rum in her bag.
She eventually attempted to leave the supermarket without paying for the item but was confronted by the proprietor who subsequently called in the police.
Cosbert appeared before Magistrate Krishendat Persaud at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court earlier this week and was placed on $25,000 bail.
The court was told that on April 17, Cosbert, a mother of six, in the company of two others, went into the J’s Supermarket located at Essex Street and Republic Road in New Amsterdam and was picked up on the surveillance camera placing the rum in her bag. The woman told investigators that she had no intention of stealing the rum and was only resting it in her bag, as she would have paid for it. Cosbert is expected to return to court on May 25.
The latest bust underscores the increased security mechanisms implemented by Berbice businessman and comes amidst calls by the Police Divisional Commander George Vyphuis for businesses to invest more in their security arrangements.
Earlier this week, a watch thief was picked up by a surveillance camera after he had stolen a watch belonging to an employee of the store he had entered. That thief was sent to jail for two months.
