The retrenchment of some 100 workers from Bosai would certainly have a negative impact on the town of Linden and on the region as a whole, says Region Ten Chairman, Mortimer Mingo, who notes that this would only add to the high unemployment rate that already exists in the region.
“I am particularly concerned about what I understand are the reasons for the layoffs; that as early as possible they are to find positive investment here in the region to deal with unemployment,” Mingo said.
Mingo said that every year there are 2,000-odd children who finish school and this, he said, does not do good for the country.
“The questions are: ‘What do we do? Where do we go from here?’ And so we are really advocating and hoping that leverage can be given to us to go out and seek inward investments for the region,” the Region Ten Chairman said.
He explained that apart from bauxite, persons can invest in the thriving timber industry in Linden, as there are value added products, furniture plants, or dealing with wood that can de done in such a manner that will create employment.
Also he said that there is potential investment in agriculture in the region, within the immediate savannahs and the surrounding Linden, but according to Mingo, one of the major concerns of investors is the question of fiscal investment regime.
Earlier this month, the Bosai Management met with the National Association of Agricultural Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE), and discussed the imminent retrenchment of workers. Bosai had indicated that the company is seriously being affected by the global economic crisis and as such will retrench some 100 workers among whom would be trainee staff, casual staff and some permanent staff.
It was noted that the workers will be paid all their benefits. For every six weeks of employment the workers will receive one week’s pay.
Bosai had explained that currently the steel industry is encountering some difficulties and as such the company was forced to make the decision.
