Residents along the Essequibo Coast who have been living in unserved electricity areas for the last five years will in two months’ time be able to have that access for the first time.
This reassurance was given on Tuesday, by GPL Construction Manager, Mr. Kumar Sharma, who noted that the main reason why there has been a lull in the progress of work was because the contractors who were afforded the contract are presently undertaking works on the East Coast.
He said that those who are without electricity will receive power as soon as early June. But they are all required to pay $15,000. He added, too, that the first phase of work was completed in 2005.
Mr Sharma said that the second phase will encompass the areas of Onderneeming Sands, Mainstay, Rivers town, Land of Plenty, Wakenaam, and Suddie. He added that materials for the project are already assembled in the various locations.
Businessman Ramlagan, of Land of Plenty, on the Essequibo, is one of the many residents who have been without access to electricity.
He vented his disgust and frustration at living in these times without electricity for so long. He said having to operate without lights for so long in these bright and enlightened days is a shame.
Mr. Ramgalan said that what really bothers him is the fact that his children who are attending school have to be caught up in this unfortunate situation. His 13-year-old daughter struggles to cope efficiently with her studies, which has resulted in her not performing as expected.
Another resident, a jeweler, complained of having to invest in a generator at great cost.
