Coach of the Inter-Guianas football team Denis ‘Chow’ Hunte in an interview with Kaieteur Sport said that the players are fully focused and confident of doing well in front of their home fans.
“We stand an excellent chance of winning the tournament because at least 7 of our players are returning from last year’s squad which finished runner-up to Suriname on goal difference,” Hunte disclosed.
Guyana opens its quest for top honours on Friday when they tackle French Guiana in both the male and female segments at the Camp Ayanganna ground. Hunte, who has a lot of experience with junior teams, having guided Pele Football Club to numerous titles locally, lamented the lack of warm-up games which was limited to just one against BV /Triumph United where they won 1-0 through a goal off the boots of Captain Andrew Murray jnr.
According to Hunte, apart from Murray jnr, the squad has players the calibre of Manasseh Primo, Devon Moseley, Lumumba Hinds, Colin Nelson, Clyde Bascom and Anthony Benfield. All of who played at the Games last year.
“All of these guys are playing football either at the First Division level or in the Premiership and have all shown admirable progress since then,” Hunte informed.
He added that the mood in the squad is good and the players are confident that they can reverse last year’s result where they lost the title via goal difference after defeating French Guiana by fewer goals than what they had suffered against Suriname. Guyana then went on to draw against the hosts Suriname in an exciting final.
Hunte did, however, caution against over-confidence, citing the fact that Suriname has always been Guyana’s nemesis.
“Even though Suriname is our main focus, we are not overlooking French Guiana and we’ve prepared for both encounters.”
Meanwhile, swimming executive Stephanie Fraser asked to comment on the team’s preparation revealed that the swimmers have been working well under the guidance of Head Coach Christopher McAdam, who is being assisted by Shyka Gonsalves.
“We expect the ones that were there before to lead our medal hunt,” Fraser said.
Swimming has four members who’re returning from last year and they included medallists Henk Lowe, Niall Roberts and female Noelle Smith, while Alan Lowe was also in the team, but failed to gain a medal.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow, at the Guyana Police Force Sports Club from 10:00 hrs ad that will be followed by action in track and field at 11:00 hrs then football at Camp Ayanganna from 14:00 hrs.
