“Your worship is not a normal hobby, but I was at a party and decided to burn a joint with meh friend,” said Yolanda Harry, after she pleaded guilty to possession of one gram of cannabis on April 18, last. Harry was appearing before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Police Prosecutor, Robert Clement told the court that on the day in question the police were on patrol duty along High Street, when they noticed the defendant acting in a suspicious manner.
Clement further told the court that they stopped Harry and searched her. The search subsequently uncovered a foil-wrapped parcel containing leaves, seeds and stem suspected to be cannabis that Harry had in her pocket.
The defendant was told of the find, arrested and subsequently charged.
When given the opportunity to defend herself, Harry said, “It was not a normal hobby.”
She said that she was at a party on Friday night and “decided to burn a joint”. She further told the magistrate that she changed her mind and consumed a quantity of alcohol instead.
She said that she left the party and went home, totally forgetting that she still had the “joint” in her possession.
She said that after she got up on Saturday morning and checked her clothes she discovered that she had the “joint” in her possession.
Harry said shortly after the police came to the apartment complex and searched the rooms. She said that police came to her room and found the “joint”.
She said that they told her that she should get dressed and accompany them to the Police Station.
“Your worship I went with them (Police) because I know that it was me joint,” Harry explained.
The defendant proceeded to tell the magistrate that she feels remorseful about the situation and promised that it would never happen again.
Magistrate Hamilton then told Harry that it was only because of her honesty that she was imposing a two-month community service sentence along with a $3,000 fine.
The magistrate cautioned Harry not to indulge herself in those activities, adding that if she drinks she can go home and sleep it off until the next day.
