A total of nine (9) clubs will battle for the top prize of $150,000 and the beautiful champion’s trophy with the losing finalist set to pocket half that amount along with a trophy.
The added incentive at stake for the top two teams in the one-round league, with the top four advancing to the super four stage, will be promotion to the Premier League ranks with the bottom two at the higher level being relegated.
The clubs in the race are Beacon, Houston Stars, Northern Rangers, Black Pearl, Thomas United, Riddim Squad, University of Guyana along with Santos and Uprising who were relegated.
BK International Western Tigers as champions of the last competition along with Flamingo, the runner-up have graduated to the Premier League ranks.
Ms. King in remarks posited that football is seen as one of the most popular sporting activities in Guyana but moreso it provides a meaningful outlet for the young men of our country. “As such, we are proud to be associated with the GFA to assist in the development of football, sporting discipline, which enables many to realize a dream.”
King noted that it is the belief of her company that once young people are nurtured properly, they will be the ambassadors of tomorrow to represent and bring glory to Guyana. “They will also give us the recognition and put us on the map because this is something Guyana, especially in the football fraternity, this is something that we are longing for, recognition on the map for football.”
King challenged the GFA and the players to execute the game in a professional manner. “We would like you to do that because at the end of day it will work to make you good leaders of society and it augurs well for the organization.”
Western Union she said would continue to support sports in general while encouraging young people with dreams to believe that their dreams can be realized. “What you have to do, like I would always say, you have to put discipline first, once you have discipline you can go a far way and this is something I would like to reinforce.”
Games will be played at the Camptown ground in Campbellville on Sunday morning’s (08:00 & 10:00hrs) beginning on May 10.
Third and fourth placed takings will be $50,000 and trophy and $25,000 respectively. The most disciplined team will also be rewarded, while the best goalkeeper, highest goal scorer and most valuable player will receive trophies.
