The security has been tightened at Magistrate Nigel Hawke’s home following a brazen armed robbery that took place in the wee hours of the morning at the Magistrate’s Non Pareil home, East Coast Demerara.
According to a top police official, there is round the clock security at the magistrate’s home. The source further said that police guards are armed.
The Guyana Police Force promised on Monday evening, after an emergency meeting with the Magistrates’ Association, that armed security personnel would be deployed at the homes of all magistrates and at the various courts.
The meeting involved the Magistrates Association of Guyana, Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee, and Commissioner of Police Henry Greene.
Also present at the meeting was Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and other members of the magistracy.
“During their interaction, the Magistrates called for immediate and sustained interventions for the overall improvement in security at the Magistrate’s Courts across the country, as well at their residences.
“The Minister, in acknowledging the number of attacks by criminal elements on Magistrates and/or their relatives and associates and in particular this most recent incident, committed to implementing a number of security measures requested by the Magistrates during the meeting,” the statement said.
“While demonstrating his full support for enhancing the safety of magistrates, the Minister called for the active involvement of the Chancellor of the Judiciary in this process.”
“The acting Chief Magistrate shared the collective view of the Magistrates to working in partnership with the security forces in order to ensure a heightened level of security for the lives of Magistrates in Guyana.”
