As family members of 12-year-old Akesha Powley struggle to come to grips with her death, they believe that there was more behind her suicide.
Initial reports are that the Powley committed suicide after being scolded by her father for stealing $100 from another sibling.
However, yesterday, one family member said that there is the opinion that there is more to it.
According to the dead girl’s mother, Savatri Budhoo, being scolded for $100 is minor matter and knowing her daughter that would not have led her to take her own life.
“I know my daughter and I don’t think is because of the money (that) she kill she self. I don’t know what really led her to do that,” Budhoo said.
She however insisted that maybe her daughter had something else that was on her mind but was too afraid to talk about it.
“She is very close with her two other sisters and from time to time they would have problems. What happen yesterday (Monday) was no different because they would always sort out whatever it was,” Akesha’s mother said.
The woman said that while her husband is trying to be strong for the rest of the family, he is feeling guilty about his daughter’s death.
“He trying to hold up but he keep blaming heself, saying that is because he quarrel wid she mek she kill she self,” She added.
Akesha’s other sister who claimed that her money was missing is also not taking the death of her sister lightly.
Budhoo said they have to keep consoling the sister who is only 14 years old that she is not to be blamed for her sister’s death.
“She keeps crying all the time saying it is because of her that her sister is dead. We are keeping a close eye on her,” Budhoo said.
Meanwhile, now with two other teenaged daughters to raise, Budhoo said the situation has brought the family closer together.
Budhoo said that she will now try to build a better relationship with her other two daughters to prevent another occurrence of suicide in the family.
Budhoo said to other mothers she would advise them to build better relationships with their children so they can be more aware of what they are dealing with.
On Monday, 12-year-old Akesha Powley ingested three carbide tablets after being scolded by her father for taking $100 from another sister.
Powley died moments after being admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Akesha Powley was a second form student of the Urmilla Academy in Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and would have celebrated her 13th birthday on June 6.
