Dear Editor,
Within the not too unreasonable coverage of the (possibly much deeper) issue pertaining to the supposed non-payment of rent to Mr. K. P. Thomas, your reporter mentioned (KN 16.04.2009) that Minister Robeson Benn said that the building was a “government occupied facility”.
Please be advised that either the goodly Minister misspoke or your reporter misquoted him. Please be further advised that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is a permanent constitutional organisation with constitutional mandates. GECOM, with its Secretariat, is not a government occupied facility.
We noticed that other media houses covering this story also conveyed the impression that GECOM, in some way, is a government facility. We reiterate that it is not.
Now that we have corrected, and hopefully dispelled, this erroneous interpretation of GECOM’s being, we do not expect a recurrence, which might tarnish GECOM’s image.
