The GTM Inter-County under-19 three-Day cricket competition is scheduled to commence today at the Anna Regina ground with Essequibo hosting Demerara from 10:00hrs.
The Demerara side, led by national under-19 left-handed opening batsman Jeetendra Sookdeo, had their final warm-up session yesterday at the match venue after arriving in Region Two yesterday morning.
The Demerara 14-man squad includes three players with regional under-19 experience in the Skipper, opener Trevon Griffith and left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun.
Both Manager Mustapha Kadir and Coach Orin Bailey lamented the lack of proper preparation and are banking on the experience and natural talent of the players to give the county success in the three-team competition.
“The team was picked last Friday and it is a good thing that rain pushed back the first match from last Saturday since we would have had to travel to Essequibo last Friday without even getting together as a team before we departed. Ideally a Coach and Captain should have at least a few practice sessions as a team before their first game to iron out little flays and gel as a team. I hope those in charge pick their teams earlier in the future,” Coach Bailey said.
“The players all seem eager to do well and we have a nice group of youngsters. But for the Coach to really make an impact he needs time and the last minute rush is not the best preparation for such a competition,” Kadir noted.
Berbice and Essequibo play the second three day game from April 26-28 in Anna Regina before the competition breaks for the one-day series which see Demerara facing Essequibo at Everest on April 30, Berbice playing Essequibo at Albion on May 1 and Berbice taking on Essequibo at DCC on May 3. The final round of the three day tournament will then be played from May 5 between Demerara and Berbice at the Stadium.
The Essequibo side will depend on Skipper and national under-19 batsman Royston Alkins and his deputy Rovindra Parasaram to lead their batting with support from National under-17 opener Harrell Greene who will do wicket-keeping duties today.
Opener Dwayne Singh, Kevin Boodie and Pomaroon all-rounder Rovi Harris are also expected to contribute with the bat for the home team which had their final practice session at the Lima ground yesterday.
The lively Ronsford Beaton is expected to lead the Essequibo pace attack with support from left-arm pacer Suresh Persaud while left-arm spinner Anthony Adams, left-arm spinning all-rounder Floyd Henry and off-spinners Christopher Blucher and Tulsieram Premnauth could do the bulk of the spinning with assistance from the Skipper on what should be a slow track with turn help for the spinners.
The Essequibo camp is confident that the hosts will be competitive since they were encamped since last week after the Essequibo trials and Manager Prince Holder and Coach Vibert Johnson will be eager for a good start to the competition today.
While the Demerara batting, led by Skipper Sookdeo, Griffith, Ryan Rajmangal, Delon Fernandes and Rajendra Naikbarran, is strong on paper, Coach Bailey said yesterday that he was disappointed that no turf practice was possible since the team was picked and explained that yesterday the players had to settle for a fielding session, spot bowling and short knock on the grass since no ground was available for a pitch session in Essequibo.
National under-17 Keeper Dexter Solomon and all-rounders Kishan Shivgobin, Andre Stoll and Carl Rambarose could also offer batting support if selected.
Left-arm pacer Stoll and the fast improving Seon Daniels should share the new ball while national under-19 left-arm back-of-the-hand spinner Totaram Bishun should lead the spin attack with support from West Indies under-15 and national under-17 leg-spinner Amir Khan and his Guyana under-17 team mate off-spinner Ricardo Devers.
