Businessman approached to buy Magistrate’s stolen laptop

The probe into last Monday morning’s robbery committed at the Non Pareil home of Magistrate Nigel Hawke has led investigators to a Lusingan property where they unearthed a bullet proof vest; 30 rounds of .357; and 40 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Police have detained a businessman and his manager at a Lusignan, East Coast Demerara establishment following the search yesterday.

Kaieteur News understands that the search was linked to information regarding the magistrate’s stolen laptop computer.

According to information reaching this newspaper, the police in their investigations received word that two men, one of whom fitted the description of the bandit who robbed the magistrate and his wife, had approached the businessman’s store offering to sell a laptop computer on Monday.

However, the manager of the store informed them that the boss was not there and that they should check back later to make the deal. But the men never returned. Armed with the information, the police swooped down on the Lusignan business place and found nothing. They then went to the manager’s home at about 11:00 hours yesterday where they unearthed the bulletproof vest and the ammunition.

The manager then informed them that the businessman had given the articles to him for safe-keeping.

No weapon was found but police suspect that the businessman deals in the purchase of stolen articles.

When questioned, the businessman told investigators that he had purchased the bullet proof vest and ammunition from a man at Stabroek Market.

However, the police did not believe his story and are working on the theory that the man may be involved in the sale of ammunition to criminal elements. He and his manager are at the Cove and John police lock-ups assisting with further investigations.

Meanwhile, two men from the Melanie Damishana area who were detained as part of the magistrate’s robbery probe remained in custody up to yesterday afternoon.
