– continues sponsorship of 2nd division team
Bread and Pastry Giants Bakewell yesterday renewed its commitment and sponsorship of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club Second Division cricket team at a simple ceremony held in the Board Room of their new office at Triumph, East Coast Demerara.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster described the team as being one of the best in the history of the club having won 5 Berbice titles and another 2 under the Bakewell sponsorship.
Bakewell’s funding of the team includes $100,000 cash and $80,000 in cricket balls, pads and a bat. The assistance will also cover transportation, meals and umpiring costs.
Foster, in praising Bakewell’s Boss Naeem Nazir for the continued faith placed in the club, assured General Manager of Bakewell Rajin Ganga that they will continue to wear the uniform with passion and pride but most importantly, “We would make sure that the Bakewell Brand is promoted across the County of Berbice. We would also like to say well done to Bakewell on their continued expansion as they continue to consolidate as one of Guyana’s leading companies.”
Ganga in response noted his company’s pleasure in continuing their partnership with the club despite the challenges faced by the global financial melt down.
“Despite this we have continued to maintain sponsorship and we do not have any intention of stopping it at the moment. We are very appreciative of the RHTY&SC for their outstanding work and we hope they can continue in this vein.”
Ganja also thanked Foster personally for his commitment towards the company even outside the sponsorship.
“We hope that in 2009 this team can continue its success and keep the flag flying high and I trust that in years to come, we can continue in the same vein.”
In 2008 the team won the George Trim and J.C Chandisingh Memorial competitions and is currently in the quarter-finals of the New Building Society competition.
“This team created history last year when the ‘B’ section became the first in the country to play female cricketers at the 2nd division level with West Indies player Erva Giddings and Guyana U-19 captain Shermaine Campbell among the lot,” Foster said.
Apart form their on field exploits, the Bakewell team has been active in several community programmes which includes a donation of $300,000 worth of books to the Lower Corentyne Secondary School, a standby generator to the Berbice Cricket Board, co-hosting the Lower Corentyne Outstanding Students Awards and two feeding programmes.
Among some of the players whose careers were shaped and aided by the Bakewell sponsorship are the Crandon brothers, Assad Fudadin, Delbert Hicks, Renwick Batson, Khemraj Mahadeo along with the current crop which includes Eon Hooper, Naresh Mahadeo, Dominic Rickey and Terrence Madramootoo, currently in the Berbice under-19 squad.
RHTY&SC also receives support from Bakewell for a number of annual projects; the youth magazine, cricket academy, awards ceremony, Christmas charity programmes and anti-drugs campaign. (Franklin Wilson)
