A Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara family was thrown into deep mourning yesterday after a young family member committed suicide.
Around 15:30 hours, 13-year-old Akesha Powley was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital moments after being admitted to the female ward.
According to one of the dead teen’s sisters, Amrita, earlier in the day another sibling claimed that she was missing one hundred dollars from her money.
“So meh sista go and tell we father dat somebody thief she money, and de only person who went in de room was Akesha,” the sister related.
Having been told this, the teen said her father called Akesha and started scolding her.
“Daddy call she and he question she about de money and she keep telling he dat she ain’t move de money…but he still keep quarrelling with she fuh de money,” Amrita said.
The grieving sister said moments later, Akesha retired to her bed and was crying.
However sometime around 13:00 hours Amrita said she noticed two carbon tablets (usually used to poison rats) under her sister’s pillow and they began enquiring what she was doing with them.
“We see she wid de carbon tablets and we ask she if she drink any and she seh no so we ask she wha she doing with dem under she pillow and she aint answer we,”.
Sometime later Amrita said she heard sounds in the house as if someone was vomiting.
“After I hear like somebody vomiting I run into de bedroom and I see meh sister vomiting, is till then we realize dat she drink de tablets, then she tell we she drink three tablets,” Amrita said.
Other family members were immediately informed and efforts were made to have the teenager rid her system of the poisonous tablets.
“We start giving she raw eggs so she could vomit, and we call a car and bring she to the hospital,” the teen’s sister related.
Once at the hospital Akesha was immediately seen by a doctor and admitted to the ward.
However moments after her admission as other family members were waiting for the 16:00 hours visiting hours they were told that Akesha had died.
It was at that point pandemonium broke out in the hospital compound as the news of the teen’s death reached them.
Others who gathered at the hospital were overwhelmed by the story of how Akesha died.
