Minibus operators and taxi drivers finally got their wish to be allowed to have music in their vehicles as well as the placement of a six-inch visor on the top portion of their windscreen.
However, there are conditions attached.
With regards to the music only the original and combined radio decks/CD player with two speakers already installed in the interior of dashboard/front doors in an imported minibus, will be allowed, while no names, slogans or drawings are permitted on the visors.
These decisions were reached at meetings between the Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Clement Rohee, and representatives of the General Minibus Association, on March 23 and April 15.
At the conclusion of the meetings, consensus was reached between the Ministry and the Association, on several areas of concern, in addition to those reached for the music and visors.
It was agreed that the replacement of radio decks/CD player, having been stolen or damaged, would be permitted, providing these are of similar specification to the original unit.
There is also to be no amplification of sound, whether by way of power amps, tweeters, equalizers, boosters or any other means, in any minibus or hire cars.
Public transportation owners had raised concern over the recent moves by the police to strip their vehicles of music and visors before granting them their road service licence.
Owners of minibuses will apply for the requisite permission to operate outside of their normal zone, where this becomes necessary
Minibus and hire car operators are advised to take note of these decisions, and are reminded that failure to comply with the laws and regulations governing public transportation will result in prosecution.
