A trio of masked men, armed with handguns, terrorized and robbed the Maikoo family in Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, at approximately 21:30 hours on Sunday last. The bandits made off with approximately $1.5 million in local currency, US$3,000 and a quantity of jewellery, said to be valued at $1.2 million.
According to a police statement, Naipaul Maikoo, along with his wife and son were about to enter their premises when the three masked men appeared and escorted them inside of the building. Once inside, the bandits began their assault, beating them about their bodies with the firearms.
The bandits demanded cash and jewellery from the terror stricken family and they (intruders) proceeded to ransack the house, before making their escape.
A report was subsequently made to the police.
In a separate incident, the ranks of a mobile police patrol stopped and searched a motor vehicle at the Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, and discovered a unlicensed .9 millimetre pistol and nine matching rounds.
The driver of the vehicle was subsequently arrested and is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The residents of the Grove area have recently noted, with displeasure, the increase in petty crimes in their area.
