With less than one week to his super/middleweight title clash with Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen is oozing confidence and his coach, Siebert Blake has likened the fight unto a clash of high powered vehicles, juxtaposing his charge with a ‘Corvette.’
Blake made this bold proclamation at a press conference convened yesterday morning at the King’s Plaza, Main Street, Georgetown, to update the media on the progress of the various fighters for their respective bouts. ‘The Battersea Bomber,’ who resides in Berbice was not there to defend himself but we have been informed that he is working very hard in his hometown to whip himself into shape for this important bout.
Even though he has shied away from a prediction Allen, just back from a training stint in New York, was extremely confident that he would defeat Eastman and win his first title since fighting professionally. Popular boxing promoter, Keith Bazilio wanted to know what Allen had learnt at the just concluded America sojourn. “My exposure has convinced me that I am still a green fighter but rest assured I have learnt a lot and am ready to take on Eastman,” he assured.
Despite Allen’s courageous boasts speculation is rife regarding his ability to overcome Eastman’s vast experience. “I have worked with Eastman for his two fights with Andrew Lewis and Denny Dalton and I am quite confident that I have detected his weak areas,” Allen’s coach disclosed.
Blake also pointed out that his charge has only just returned from the USA where he has been practicing his trade among the best fighters in the world. Indeed, Allen has been the sparring partner of former middleweight champion, Glen Johnson at the famous Kick Boxing Gym, Miami Florida. He has also had a recent stint with former world middleweight champion, Bernard “The Executioner’ Hopkins and Allen said that ‘The Executioner was pleased with his performance.
Allen opened camp at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) Boxing Gym, yesterday afternoon and Blake said that he will be engaging Allen in discussions regarding his local training programme. He said that Allen would have received good tutorship from Colin Morgan while in the USA and would have completed the bulk of the work. Blake further explained that his duty would be to fine tune what Allen has learnt while in the USA.
Allen is not the only fighter that is spewing confidence. Shaundel ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred has promised to beat up Stephney ‘Stepping Razor’ George for the third time in their bantamweight title fight.
“Stephney is no match for me,” she boasted. “During my career I have fought opponents that are better than she and I have defeated them,” Alfred reminded. George was also absent from the press conference but her coach Terrence Poole warned Alfred not to get too brash. “Shaundel will be in for some surprises,” he said. “She may regard this fight as a walkover but George is determined to overturn the two previous decisions.”
Veteran boxer, Paul Lewis has openly vowed to teach Dexter Marques a lesson in the finer art of the sport. The two are scheduled to face off in a bantamweight encounter and Lewis has promised that the fight would be the best for the night. “Dexter represents youth and I represent experience and on fight night experience will prevail,” Lewis boasted. He said that he has been in training for more than five weeks and is rounding off nicely into shape. “Paul is a legitimate contender and can create an upset,” President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool warned.
Two other bouts have caught the imagination of boxing pundits. The first is the heavyweight clash between Shaundel Parks and Shelly ‘The Boom’ Gibson. Parks is entering this bout full of confidence after defeating ‘The Boom’ on a card promoted in the Mining Town about five years ago. Since then Parks had taken a self imposed hiatus to, as she explained, “Sort out some personal problems.”
She said that those issues are now behind her and she is ready to once again stamp her authority in the ‘square jungle.’ However, ‘The Boom’ has different ideas. “I will leave all the talking for the ring,” she ominously disclosed. Both fighters are well equipped to make good of their boasts. Both are stocky and between them they weigh a whooping 560 pounds.
Avlon Scotland and Debbie Tyson are also gunning for each other. Both are debutants but from all appearances, nurture a deep seated hatred for each other. “This is going to be war!” Tyson, who proclaimed to be a follower of Obama’s ideology asserted. Scotland is also new to the game. She said she was inspired by her cousin, Clevon Rock who has won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Youth Championships in Pune, India late last year. She also feels that she will win her bout.
The card is organized by the S&S Promotions, shortly after that group had promoted a similar card that was headlined by Eastman and Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes.
