Dear Editor,
With reference to an article in your newspaper – “Administration wants to avoid Local Govt. Commission – PNCR” I need to say a few things.
As a property owner, in this city for more than 15 years, I feel that both the ruling party – PPP/C and the opposition – PNCR are playing games with the future of Georgetown. It is a power game that neither of the parties would win but we property owners would continue to suffer.
Right now the PNCR is not in a position to win local government elections if it is called this year and the PPP/C believes that they have the upper hand so they want it. It is all well and good for them to play politics, but what about us?
Who is watching out for our interests and the future of our children? If there is no local government election this year then we would have to face the music of the incompetent Mayor Green and his band of merry men. Floods would continue to ravish our properties. They just do not care about citizens. So I agree with the President, the task force had eight years to do its work but failed.
Must citizens continue to suffer because of the incompetency of its members? The answer must be no. And which country could have a council in place for nearly 15 years. It’s ludicrous.
All right thinking Guyanese should raise their voices against this democratic anomaly and demand local government elections by November 2009.
