Police have released the two suspects in connection with the shooting of Commissioner of Insurance Maria van Beek, but have now detained several others as they seek a motive for the attack.
A top police official said that the two men were released after persons who witnessed the shooting failed to pick them out during an identification parade which was conducted yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that Mrs. van Beek did not take part in the identification parade.
One of the men was held shortly after the attack while the other was detained over the weekend.
Meanwhile, police officials revealed that investigators are questioning several people about the shooting. However, the officials declined to say whether they were suspects in the shooting or if it sis suspected that they planned the attack.
While police have ruled out robbery they have declined to speculate on a motive.
Van Beek was shot in the chest while driving along Lombard Street in heavy traffic on Thursday last.
Eyewitnesses said that the gunman struck in the vicinity of Lombard and Leopold Streets, standing in front of van Beek’s car before firing a bullet into her right front window.
He then escaped with an accomplice who was waiting on a motorcycle in Leopold Street.
