Cacique Inc. blood drive signifies persons willing to donate – Health Minister

The successful blood drive held by Cacique Inc. supports the belief of the Ministry of Health that Guyana is capable of achieving its 100 percent voluntary donation target.
This is according to Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy who noted that although Guyana would not achieve that target for this year, he is confident that it will happen some time in the future. He added that the work being done by corporate entities like Cacique Inc, the Private sector and the public, indicates that persons are willing to come forward and donate blood.
The Health Minister noted that persons are now beginning to recognize the hard work that is required with respect to a blood drive, in order to provide quality service to the people, and that is why there is a need for all to play a role in the process.
Dr. Ramsammy explained that there is a cost that is attached to organizing, mobilizing and facilitating a blood drive. This cost he said is not seen or included in the national budget.
This is one of the reasons why Ramsammy had said that it would take some $20 billion to provide the preferred level of health care to the people, but as it is currently, the budget only extends $12 billion to the health sector. However, an additional $3 billion is given to the health sector by donor agencies, but the ministry is still effectively $5 billion short.
Despite this, Minister Ramsammy said that his Ministry is still doing its best to provide quality health care.
He also expressed his satisfaction with Cacique Inc. for being able to collect a total of 100 units of blood in one event. This, he said, is a rare occurrence, and he encouraged other corporate entities to take example.
