Residents of Lama Avenue, Bel Air Park, are upset that the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has chosen to block the drain outside its Vlissengen Road, Georgetown office.
The drain has been in existence for as long as they can remember, and the older residents say the decision to block the drain is causing problems for them whenever it rains.
The Authority filled the drain with mud recently, but as a result of erosion, some of the mud is now building up in the adjoining drain, which flows north into the Vlissengen Road Canal. As a result, residents say when it rains, the silted up canal makes it difficult for the water to flow off the land.
Rawle Aaron, GWI Public Relations Officer, told Kaieteur News, that the drain was filled up to construct a car park for the utility, since the Shelter Belt location now houses the main offices.
He said the construction of the car park is a work in progress and GWI would be seeking to ensure that the mud used in covering the drain does not silt up or block the drain that carries water out of the residential community.
According to Aaron, the Ministry of Public Works granted permission for the construction of the car park.
