– ID parade likely this week
Police have now detained a second man in connection with the shooting of Commissioner of Insurance Maria van Beek but he is denying any involvement in the attempt on her life.
A top police official said that the suspect was detained over the weekend based on information that investigators received.
According to the official, the man is not believed to be the motorcyclist who helped the gunman escape. He also said that the suspect has said he was not involved in the attack on van Beek.
Another official said that the first man who was detained is still in custody. Reports indicate that he has refused to cooperate with investigators.
However, Kaieteur News was told that the two men are likely to be placed on an identification parade within a few days.
Van Beek was shot in the chest while driving along Lombard Street in heavy traffic on Thursday last.
Eyewitnesses said that the gunman struck in the vicinity of Lombard and Leopold Streets, standing in front of van Beek’s car before firing a bullet into her right front window.
He then escaped with an accomplice who was waiting on a motorcycle in Leopold Street.
