DEar Editor,
By accomplishing his maiden regional first class century against Barbados at Providence Stadium, Rose Hall Town Sports Club batsman Royston Crandon have now joined an elite list of Guyanese batsmen who have achieved the ‘double’, meaning scoring centuries for the Land of Many Waters at both the Regional First Class level in both four-day and the Limited Overs versions of the game.
Crandon created history when he became the first Guyanese batman to score a regional limited overs century on debut against the Windward Islands in Grenada 2007.
The first to achieve the feat was the flambouyant GCC left hander, Timur Mohamed who caressed the Jamaican attack with 110 in the four day first class fixture then returned in the fifty overs Geddes Grant Harrison line encounter with 104. Both matches were contested at Jarrett Park, Montego Bay 1980.
Roy Federicks was next to add a Regional One Day century to his list of regional first class tons when he scored a belligerent 119 against the Leewards at the A.R.G during the Geddes Grant Harrison line final 1980.
The left handed trend continued when Clayton Lambert, who at the time had already scored four regional first class centuries, fashioned a robust 113 undefeated against the Leewards at Hampton Court, 1989.
Carl Hooper put a halt to the left handed dominance when he had his first regional one day century, a flambouyant 104 against Leewards at Blairmont 1995 at that time he also had three regional first class centuries.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was next to achieve the ‘double’ when he scored his first regional one day century against Barbados at Discovery Bay Jamaica 1998.
Sewnarine Chattergoon achievement is unique; he scored a Regional one day century 104 against Antigua & Barbuda, 2001 at Bourda and then scored his 1st first class century against Bangladesh ‘A’ at Bourda the following year 2002.
Ramnaresh Sarwan inked his name on the list with three Regional one day centuries in 2005 to accompany his list at first class level.
