-Calls for equal share of spotlight in other categories
By Rawle Welch
“I don’t want to blow my own trumpet, but we’ve set ourselves a goal and that is to sweep all three categories this year”, veteran motor racer Jad Rahaman told Kaieteur Sport during an interview yesterday, at the Team’s garage.
The senior Rahaman, who also has a son (Ryan) involved in the sport, said that the new challenge this year for them is to grab all three titles in the Group 2A, 2B and 3 categories and they are currently making the necessary preparations to increase their chances of doing so.
Rahaman, who will be making a comeback after a one-year absence from the sport due to a spinal injury, felt that he and his son have a team of mechanics coupled with their skills that can ensure that the set goals are achieved.
Previously sidelined by the injury, Rahaman, who comes from a family of racers that included his father and brother (Ray) looked determined during the discourse and vowed to regain his crown come May 3 when the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club stages its opening Meeting at the South Dakota Circuit.
Having received permission from his medical team to resume his illustrious career, the lanky racer said that he will now have to wear the Head and Neck Support; (HANS) equipment which is suppose to be worn by all motor racers to prevent severe injuries to the head and neck in the event of an accident on the track.
“We will be running three cars, the two Ford Escorts in the 2A and B divisions, while Ryan will drive his Cosworth Sierra in the Group 3 category,” Rahaman disclosed. “Our intention is to achieve a rare feat in local motor racing which is for the team to win all three groups,” he pointed out.
He reckoned that in the 2A division, the likes of Chet Singh, Ernesto Choo, Syed Hassan, Raymond Alli, Mohamed Roshandin and US-based John Joseph could all pose a threat to his ambitions, but with good preparations, he believes that he could repel any effort that could hinder his dominance.
In the 2B category, he said that even though drivers such as Gavin Gayadin, Kemal Rahaman, Vishaul Sawh, Rupie Shewjattan and Tanko Baboolall are all excellent competitors, he was confident that Ryan will continue his control which has been going on for the past 2-3 years.
“In Group 3, Ryan still holds the edge and even though most of the drivers have been more thorough in terms of preparations, I still don’t feel that they could interrupt his reign,” the senior Rahaman indicated.
With the experienced Barbadian Freddie Mapp as the team’s Chief Mechanic, such an achievement is not beyond their reach.
Commenting on the sport, Ryan said he felt more should be done to spread the image in all the categories both at the local and regional levels.
“I think that all the divisions are important, but at times you find that the spotlight is mainly on Group 4 where the fastest cars are involved,” he stated.
He said that since its emergence, the group has overshadowed the other categories, it must be remembered that all the other segments help make the sport just as exciting to the fans.
Rahaman said that even at the Caribbean level, the battle for regional supremacy should not be contained to the Group 4, but all the other categories as well.
However, despite those views, Rahaman felt that the current executive has been doing an excellent job which has been able to increase the popularity of the sport as well as provide the injection it is enjoying.
