Guyana’s lone athlete at the XXIV Carifta Swimming and Synchronized Swimming Championship Championships Niall Roberts, continued to endure a tough time on day three of the competition yesterday at the Piscina Olimpico “Roly Bisslik”, Savaneta in Aruba
Competing in the boy’s 15-17 age group Roberts’ first event was the 100m Freestyle, in which he was seeded 12th with a time of 56.00sec. In the preliminary heat, he placed 13th with the same time. Trinidad and Tobago’s Caryle Blondell won the race in a time of 53.24. He was also seeded first with 52.93.
In the grueling 200m Butterfly, in which he was entered for the experience, he started with a time of 2:36.06 (seeded 11th) and bettered his time with a swim of 2:35.81 (placing 10th). Mathias Bellance of Martinique was the winner in 2:15.10 with a seeded time of 2:13.07. Roberts’ final and best event will be the 50m Freestyle today. He is going into this event seeded 4th with a time of 24.90.
Since Roberts is the only swimmer from Guyana and based on the excellent relationship the Guyana Association enjoys with their counterparts from Trinidad and Tobago, their coach Franz Huggins is standing in as coach for Roberts.
Huggins is no stranger to Guyana and Roberts as he was coach of this country’s 4-member team (Jessica Stephenson, Linden Wickham, Ronaldo Rodrigues & Roberts) at the XXIII Carifta Swimming and Synchronized Swimming Championships which was also held in Aruba March 26 – 31, last year.
Roberts is expected back on Tuesday and will continue training with the local team as they wind down preparations for the first segment of the Inter Guiana Games. Twenty countries including Guyana are participating at this years Carifta Swimming and Synchronized Swimming championships.
The other countries are Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Martinique, Barbados, Netherlands Antilles, Bermuda, St. Lucia, Cayman Islands, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Dominica, Suriname, French Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, Turks & Caicos Islands, Guadeloupe and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The swimming competition is being held in the 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17 female and male categories and Synchronized Swimming in the following age groups: 12 & under, 13-15 and 16-18 female.
