Former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dennis Gouveia died yesterday at Toronto General Hospital after being in the Intensive Care Unit for two weeks.
The 66-year-old who served in the Ministry between 1974 and 1988 also worked at Embassies for Guyana in Washington, USA and Moscow between 1976 and 1982.
Gouveia, who was Permanent Secretary between 1982 and 1988, then took up the post as Director of Administration at the Guyana Natural Resources Agency (GNRA) upon resigning from the Foreign Ministry in 1988. He subsequently took up residence in Canada
Gouveia, who hails from Grant Buxton, Pomeroon, also worked in the Ministry of National Development on his return from a four-year scholarship in the USA where he gained Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sociology from the University of Missouri.
He leaves to mourn his wife Cicely, his son Sean, daughters Nadia, Cindy and grandson, Mikhail.
Gouveia was domiciled since 1990 in Canada where he continued his first profession of teaching until his passing.
He was an avid sportsman, representing Essequibo at senior Inter-County cricket and ruling the roost in over-35 tennis at the national level.
