Dwayne Stafford thought that when he removed a cell phone from a New Amsterdam store he was home and dry. He did not cater for being caught on the store’s surveillance cameras.
On Friday he was sent to jail for two months after pleading guilty to a charge of simple larceny of the cellular phone, valued at $50,000, property of Devon Alexander, an employee of J’s Supermarket.
Stafford, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Geeta Chandan Persid Edmond at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
The court was told by prosecutor Donna Grant-Fraser that on Tuesday April 14, Alexander had secured his phone at his work place and proceeded to do his chores. Stafford subsequently entered the premises and secretly removed the phone and disappeared.
Around 16:30 hrs the owner discovered the phone missing and reported to his boss.
A review of the security cameras revealed the bandit removing the phone, which was subsequently recovered.
A report was made and the culprit was apprehended.
Confronted with the evidence, the perpetrator confessed to the crime and reportedly begged for a chance.
